Enyimba, led by chairman Nwankwo Kanu, dazzled in Aba with a five-goal thriller to tighten their NPFL lead, thrilling Governor Alex Otti and home fans against Bendel Insurance.

Nwankwo Kanu’s Enyimba tightened their grip at the top of the table after an inspired display in front of Governor Otti in five-goal thriller in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.

The presence of Abia State Governor Alex Otti turned out to be the inspiration for Enyimba as the People’s Elephant twice came from behind to beat visitors Bendel Insurance.

The clash lived up to its pre-match hype as one of the games of week five in the NPFL, but the Elephants were forced by the Benin Arsenal to dig deep to preserve their position at the top of the table.

Bendel Insurance started superbly with a shock lead inside the opening two, leaving the home side and their fans shocked before the arrival of their special guest, Alex Otti to the Elephant Park Stadium in Aba.

However, Abiodun Joseph’s 18th minute goal ensured there was nothing to separate both sides heading into the break.



Enyimba were forced to dig deep for the win by Bendel Insurance.

The second half started as the first, with the Benin Arsenal back in front, this time from the spot as Wisdom udom converted calmly to restore their lead.

But two goals in four minutes, including a penalty for Enyimba, completely turned things around for the Elephants with Chidera Michael’s 69th minute striker the winner.

A thrilling display and win in front of the Governor tightened Enyimba’s position at the top of the table. The Aba Millionaires are now on 11 points after three wins and two draws in five matches.

Governor Otti praised the team for their resilience and spirit to come from behind to pull off the big and decisive win.


“Enyimba FC showcased the true “can-do” spirit of our people. On and off the pitch, we continue to prove that with unity and belief, greatness is always within reach,” he posted on his Facebook account.

They sit one point behind Nasarawa United, who pulled off a shock away win against Bayelsa United to move behind the Elephants.
