Nigeria Opts Out of Film Submission for 2026 Oscars: What’s Behind the Decision?

The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has announced that it will not be submitting any Nigerian film for consideration in the International Feature Film category at the 2026 Academy Awards.

Stephanie Linus, chairperson of NOSC, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the committee initiated a call for film entries in August, receiving a total of six submissions.

Despite the entries, the committee convened over the weekend and, by majority vote, decided to opt for “No Submission,” thereby concluding the selection process for this year.

Linus explained, “Although Nigerian cinema has made notable strides and there is increasing familiarity with the standards required for international film festivals, there remains a gap in both creative vision and technical execution that hinders the films’ ability to compete effectively on the global stage.”

The committee has formally informed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of their decision.
