Getafe Frustrated as Christantus Uche Still Awaits First Start for Crystal Palace

Getafe‘s patience is wearing thin over Crystal Palace‘s management of striker Christantus Uche following his last-minute transfer to Selhurst Park, according to Soccernet.ng.

The Spanish club reluctantly agreed to loan out Christantus Uche, with a deal that could become permanent for €21 million if the Nigerian forward starts in at least ten matches across all competitions.

Yet, nearly a month into his stint at Palace, the 22-year-old has not been included in the starting lineup and has only accumulated 51 minutes of playing time under manager Oliver Glasner.

This minimal involvement has sparked concern back in Madrid.

Insiders close to Getafe suspect that Crystal Palace might be intentionally limiting Uche’s minutes to circumvent the obligation to buy him permanently, effectively treating him as a temporary squad member before sending him back next summer.

The transfer itself was met with skepticism from the outset.

Uche had expressed a strong desire to remain at Getafe after just one season in La Liga, where he appeared in 33 games last year, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

Starting this season on a high note, the Super Eagles midfielder had already contributed a goal and an assist in the first three league matches.

Despite Uche’s reluctance and having turned down a similar offer from Wolves earlier in the summer, Getafe pushed through the transfer.

However, Palace’s trust in the player has been limited so far.

Uche’s appearances have been confined to brief cameos against Sunderland, West Ham, and Liverpool, along with a 45-minute stint in the EFL Cup clash with Millwall. Otherwise, he has mostly remained on the bench.

Getafe worry this trend will persist. Since the purchase obligation hinges on the number of starts rather than total appearances, they believe Palace’s tactic is to minimize Uche’s starting opportunities, thereby avoiding the €21 million buyout and returning him without a fee at the end of the season.

This scenario has already triggered internal debates at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, with club executives contemplating whether to formally address their concerns with Palace during the January transfer window if Uche’s sidelining continues.

On a positive note, Uche has maintained a professional attitude, showing no visible signs of frustration and seems to be settling well into English football while building rapport with his new teammates.

Nonetheless, transitioning from a key player in Spain to a peripheral figure in England, Uche’s Premier League journey risks being unproductive unless Glasner rethinks his utilization of the talented forward.
