Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla has reacted to Nigerian star Tiwa Savage’s apology to Black Americans over her use of the term “coloured.”
Tyla earlier identified herself as “coloured,” a term widely accepted in South Africa for people of mixed descent but considered offensive in the United States. The remark drew backlash from many Americans, especially within the Black community.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Tiwa Savage apologised on Tyla’s behalf, introducing herself as the singer’s “elder.” She said she was sorry to African-Americans for the misunderstanding.
The move, however, triggered outrage among South Africans, who criticised Savage for speaking for Tyla without understanding their racial identity and terminology.
At the Global Citizen Festival in New York, Tyla appeared to distance herself from the apology, telling the crowd: “Sorry, I am not sorry,” before performing her song ‘Mr Media.’
Her statement drew widespread praise at home, with thousands of South Africans sharing the clip online and commending her for standing firm on her race and identity.
