‘It was immediate for me, i knew’ – Super Eagles star opens up on why he picked Nigeria

Super Eagles left-back Felix Agu has spoken of his pride and excitement at representing Nigeria, following his recent call-up to the national team.

Though he has only one cap to his name, Agu is eager to pull on the famous green and white jersey once again, not just as a player, but as someone stepping into a story much bigger than himself.

Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Agu tells the story of how he had always wanted to play for the Nigerian national team.

Now, with every appearance for the Super Eagles, Agu feels he is honouring more than just a call-up, but he is also connecting with his roots.

What Felix Agu said

“My dad was born in Nigeria and still kept connections with his family and everyone back home,” Agu said after, as shared in X.

“Through him, I always kept in touch with the culture. Once I got the call-up and spoke to the coaches, it was very clear to me that I wanted to represent Nigeria.

“I always felt proud of my Nigerian heritage. I didn’t feel like I had to hide it,” he explained. “For me, it wasn’t difficult. I always represented it, and now I’m happy to represent it even more.”

The Nigerian community in his hometown wasn’t large, “not like Berlin or Hamburg,” he admitted, but that didn’t matter.

“Nowadays, through YouTube, through online stuff, you stay connected. I grew up hearing the music, the language, the culture.”

Having already represented Germany at the U21 level, he embraced the opportunity to play senior international football with Nigeria.

“With Germany, of course, I grew up here. But when Nigeria called, it was immediate for me. I knew.”
