Alex Iwobi has rewritten Nigerian Premier League history, surpassing several iconic Super Eagles players.
Currently starring for Fulham, Iwobi has climbed to the second spot for the most Premier League appearances by a Nigerian footballer.
Having been part of the English top flight from a young age, Iwobi’s journey began in Arsenal’s youth system, where he developed into a prominent figure on the pitch.
Throughout his career, the midfielder has represented Arsenal and Everton before making a significant impact at Fulham, where he remains a key player.
Setting a New Benchmark
Iwobi has now eclipsed the Premier League appearance records of Nigerian greats such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, and Mikel Obi.
Soar Super Eagles on X reported, “Last night, Alex Iwobi matched Shola Ameobi‘s record for the highest number of Premier League appearances by a Nigerian ✨ A seasoned pro at 29! 🙌🏽”
With 298 Premier League matches under his belt, Iwobi has now equaled Ameobi’s longstanding record.
Trailing behind him are Kanu with 273 appearances, Aiyegbeni Yakubu with 252, and Mikel Obi with 249, rounding out the top five Nigerian players in Premier League history.
Iwobi added to his tally during Fulham’s 3-1 loss to a strong Bournemouth side on Friday night, demonstrating his consistent presence on the field.
To date, the Nigerian international has made 85 appearances for Fulham, contributing 16 goals and 10 assists, underscoring his value to the team.
