At least 30 individuals were injured following a Russian drone assault on a railway station located in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Sumy, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on Saturday.
Since the onset of the invasion in February 2022, Russian forces have consistently targeted Ukraine’s rail networks, aiming to disrupt critical transportation routes.
Zelensky described the attack on the Shostka station in Sumy as “brutal,” emphasizing the human toll of the strike.
“Currently, we have confirmed at least 30 casualties, including both passengers and railway employees,” he stated.
He shared footage depicting a severely damaged train carriage, engulfed in flames, with shattered windows and twisted metal debris scattered around.
“It is inconceivable that the Russian forces were unaware they were targeting civilians,” Zelensky added.
The station lies approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Russian border, highlighting the proximity of the conflict zone.
In a related development, a series of overnight Russian attacks on Saturday resulted in power outages affecting roughly 50,000 homes in the northern Chernigiv region.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian military sources announced a successful strike on a significant oil refinery situated in Russia’s northwestern Leningrad area.
Kyiv has pledged to escalate its long-range drone operations against Russian energy infrastructure, framing these actions as justified retaliation for Russia’s persistent bombardment of Ukrainian cities and electrical grids.
