Authorities in Anambra State have detained a 46-year-old man, Obadigbo Emmanuel Anumudu, who stands accused as the main perpetrator behind the brutal killing and decapitation of 69-year-old Mrs. Obianuju Akubi. The incident occurred in Umueri, located within the Anambra East Local Government Area, in July 2024.
According to a statement from the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, officers from the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu acted on reliable intelligence to raid Aguleri in Anambra East, where they successfully captured the suspect. Anumudu had been evading arrest for more than a year. During questioning, he admitted responsibility for the crime and provided critical details that helped identify other accomplices involved in the horrific act against the elderly victim.
SP Ikenga revealed, “The suspect fled after committing the savage murder and beheading of Mrs. Obianuju Akubi on July 22, 2024. Upon interrogation, he not only confessed but also named his co-conspirators and revealed the location of the victim’s severed head, which was removed following the attack.”
The police spokesperson emphasized that efforts to track down the remaining members of the criminal group are ongoing, with a commitment to ensuring they face legal consequences. Further information regarding the investigation will be shared with the public as it becomes available.
