President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially recognized the conclusion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu‘s service as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking the end of his second term in office.
Professor Yakubu was first appointed in November 2015 as the 14th INEC chairman, entrusted with a five-year mandate. His tenure was subsequently renewed in 2020 for another term, which has now reached its conclusion.
In a statement released on Monday, Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, conveyed Tinubu’s deep appreciation for Yakubu’s steadfast dedication and his instrumental contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic framework.
“President Tinubu praised Professor Yakubu for his resolute devotion to the country and his essential role in facilitating transparent and credible elections throughout his decade-long leadership,” the statement affirmed.
In recognition of his exemplary service, the President conferred upon Yakubu the esteemed national honor of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
Additionally, President Tinubu has directed that May Agbamuche-Mbu, the senior-most national commissioner at INEC, assume the role of acting chairperson until a permanent successor is appointed.
“Professor Yakubu will formally transfer his duties to May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will manage the commission’s affairs during this transitional phase as the search for a new chairman proceeds,” Onanuga clarified.
In response to the announcement, Professor Yakubu expressed sincere gratitude to President Tinubu for the honor of serving Nigeria over the past ten years.
In a letter dated October 3, 2025, Yakubu thanked the administration for the opportunity to lead the commission since his initial appointment in 2015.
Yakubu’s exit marks the end of a significant era at INEC, during which he oversaw two pivotal general elections in 2019 and 2023, along with numerous supplementary electoral activities that shaped Nigeria’s political landscape.
