Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has firmly dismissed recent disparaging remarks branding his supporters-popularly known as Obidients-as “street urchins.” He emphasized that his political mission is rooted in advocating for the everyday Nigerian rather than the affluent elite.

This statement followed a widely circulated video featuring Kenneth Okonkwo, a former Labour Party member, who criticized Obi for allegedly attracting “classless street urchins” and failing to curb misinformation within his ranks.

In the clip, Okonkwo remarked, “Peter Obi’s challenge is that he draws in unruly, disrespectful, and ill-tempered individuals-these are the kind of followers he now commands.”

Obi responded with profound disappointment, condemning such demeaning language and pointing out the unfortunate tendency among some Nigerians to belittle others in such a disrespectful manner.

“At the heart of my political beliefs lies respect for every human being. There are no street urchins among us. Lately, I have heard some label my supporters as low-class, even going as far as calling them ‘street urchins’ and worthless,” Obi stated.

The former governor of Anambra State stressed that every Nigerian, regardless of their social or economic status, deserves honor and dignity.

“I have never looked down on anyone; my aim has always been to elevate others. True progress comes from lifting those around us,” Obi affirmed.

He elaborated that his political path is not about catering to the privileged class but about representing ordinary Nigerians whose voices have been sidelined and whose resources have been exploited by self-proclaimed elites flaunting lofty titles.

Obi criticized this elitist attitude as symptomatic of the nation’s broader struggles, where pervasive poverty and inequality leave many vulnerable to disdain from those in positions of power.

“No Nigerian is insignificant or a street urchin,” he asserted. “It is a sad reflection on our country that everyday citizens, burdened by economic hardship, are disparaged by their own leaders.”

Reaffirming his commitment to inclusive governance, Obi highlighted that authentic leadership means empowering the vulnerable and guaranteeing all Nigerians access to vital services such as education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

“Every Nigerian merits dignity, opportunity, and support. Genuine leadership is about uplifting the disadvantaged, not diminishing them,” he concluded.
