Ex-Manchester City Defender Proudly Embraces His Nigerian Heritage
Manuel Akanji, the Swiss international and former Manchester City defender, has openly shared his deep pride in his Nigerian ancestry, emphasizing how this heritage remains a vital part of his personal identity.
Akanji’s Reflections on His Heritage
In a candid discussion with Inter TV, Akanji highlighted that despite representing Switzerland on the international stage, his Nigerian background continues to influence his sense of self profoundly.
Super Eagles tattoo“While I proudly wear the Swiss jersey, my Nigerian roots are something I cherish deeply. It’s been quite some time since I last visited Nigeria,” Akanji shared.
The 29-year-old also opened up about the significance of a tattoo he sports – an eagle, which represents his connection to Nigeria’s national football team.
“The eagle tattoo is a tribute to the Nigerian national team. It’s a symbol I carry with me always,” he explained.
Since his senior debut in 2017, Akanji has been a cornerstone of the Swiss national team, participating in major competitions such as the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, as well as UEFA Euro 2020 and 2024.
Celebrated for his reliability and leadership at the back, Akanji earned a spot in the UEFA Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament, playing a pivotal role in Switzerland’s journey to the quarter-finals.
