The UK’s plastic recycling sector, valued at nearly £2 billion and supporting around 5,000 jobs, is facing a severe decline. This downturn is largely attributed to a government oversight that permits the export of 600,000 tonnes of plastic waste every year, undermining domestic recycling efforts.

According to information obtained from industry experts, over the last two years, 21 plastic recycling and processing facilities across the country have ceased operations. This wave of closures is driven by the massive volume of plastic waste being shipped abroad, the low cost of new virgin plastic, and a surge of inexpensive plastic imports from Asian markets.
