Austin Eguavoen Opens Up on Super Eagles Coaching Rumors: “I Am Praying

Augustine Eguavoen, serving as the Technical Director for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has categorically dismissed speculation linking him to the head coach position of the Super Eagles. This comes amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Eric Chelle‘s leadership, as reported by Soccernet.ng.

Earlier this week, various news sources speculated that Eguavoen, along with U-20 coach Ladan Bosso, could be potential candidates to replace Chelle if Nigeria fails to secure qualification for the World Cup.

Nonetheless, Eguavoen swiftly denied these rumors, describing them as unfounded and harmful to the team’s spirit.

It is worth noting that Eguavoen previously held the position of interim head coach for the Super Eagles during the closing months of 2024, prior to Chelle’s appointment in January.

“These baseless stories are quite disheartening, and frankly, I am unsure where they originated,” Eguavoen expressed in an official statement from the NFF on Thursday.

“I share a professional and respectful relationship with Coach Eric Chelle and have no ambitions to take over as head coach. My sincere wish is for his continued success.”

The former Super Eagles head coach underscored the necessity for unity within Nigeria’s football fraternity, warning that divisive rumors could distract the team during this crucial phase.

“Similar unfounded chatter has previously caused friction between me and former coaches Gernot Rohr and José Peseiro during their tenures. Such speculation serves no purpose,” he noted.

“Our shared objective must be to propel the Super Eagles to World Cup qualification and to victory at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.”

Super Eagles Face Crucial Phase in World Cup Qualifiers

Guided by Eric Chelle, Nigeria is entering a decisive stretch in their quest for World Cup qualification, with back-to-back fixtures against Lesotho and Benin set to determine their fate.

At present, the Super Eagles sit third in Group C, accumulating 11 points, trailing the group leaders Benin and second-placed South Africa by three points, with only two matches left to play.

Only the group winner will earn direct entry to the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, while the runner-up must compete in a challenging playoff mini-tournament for Africa’s limited remaining slots.

Nigeria’s campaign received an unexpected boost when FIFA penalized South Africa by deducting three points for fielding an ineligible player in their match against Lesotho. This penalty dropped Bafana Bafana below Benin on goal difference, intensifying the competition for qualification.

The battle in Group C remains wide open, with five of the six teams-Nigeria, Benin, South Africa, Rwanda, and Lesotho-all still mathematically capable of finishing in the top two. Zimbabwe is the only team eliminated from contention.

Had South Africa avoided the points deduction, they would be well-positioned to challenge for qualification. Now, they must secure victories in their remaining fixtures against Zimbabwe and Rwanda to keep their hopes alive.

For Nigeria, the path is clear: a victory over Lesotho this Friday is imperative. Any other outcome would place their World Cup ambitions in serious jeopardy ahead of the decisive clash with Benin, which is shaping up to be the group’s defining encounter.

While Lesotho and Rwanda still harbor slim chances of advancing, they require flawless performances combined with favorable results elsewhere to overtake the frontrunners.
