Amaju Pinnick, the former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has called on the Super Eagles to mirror their impressive club performances in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The Nigerian national team currently finds itself in a precarious situation, facing the possibility of missing the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive time-a scenario unprecedented in their history.
With only two qualifying matches left, Nigeria trails the leaders of Group C, Benin and South Africa, by three points.
The Super Eagles are set to clash with Lesotho in their next qualifier this Friday, followed by a decisive encounter against the Benin Republic.
Pinnick’s Perspective
Speaking to ARISE News ahead of the Lesotho match, Pinnick emphasized the importance of national pride and discipline as pillars for success.
He remains hopeful about Nigeria’s chances of securing qualification, provided the players maintain focus and solidarity.
“The key is to motivate the players by reminding them of the honor and spirit of representing Nigeria,” Pinnick stated.
“I urge the players to embody patriotism both on and off the field. They should deliver the same commitment and passion they show at their clubs when representing Nigeria,” he added.
“I always remind them that the captain acts as the coach on the pitch. I keep in close contact with the team because qualifying is absolutely vital,” Pinnick explained.
“I firmly believe qualification is still within reach. If we secure a win against Lesotho and then overcome Benin at home, we will keep our hopes alive,” he concluded.
Many of Nigeria’s key players have been showcasing exceptional form with their European clubs, raising expectations that they will translate this high standard to the national team under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle.
