In a recent phone call on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reached out to Donald Trump, urging him to play a pivotal role in brokering peace talks for Ukraine. Zelensky highlighted Trump’s prior achievements in facilitating peace agreements in the Middle East as a hopeful precedent for resolving the conflict involving Russia.
“Success in settling disputes in one region suggests that other conflicts, including the ongoing war with Russia, can also find a peaceful solution,” Zelensky stated in a post on Facebook.
The rapport between the two leaders has notably warmed since their previously strained interaction during a highly publicized White House meeting earlier this year.
Trump has since referred to Zelensky as a “respectable person” and reaffirmed his support for Ukraine amid its continued defense against the Russian invasion that began in 2022.
Additionally, the two presidents had a brief encounter at the United Nations General Assembly in New York last September, further signaling a thaw in their diplomatic relations.
