Rohr Reveals Benin’s Game-Changer: “This Could Be the Ultimate Edge Over the Super Eagles

Gernot Rohr, the head coach of Benin Republic, expresses strong belief in his team’s tactical advantage over Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of their decisive match in Uyo.

As both sides prepare for a critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture set for Tuesday in Uyo, the stakes are high with each team aiming to secure their place on football’s biggest stage.

Leading Group C, the Benin Squirrels, under Rohr’s leadership-who notably coached the Super Eagles in the past-understand that their destiny is firmly in their own hands.

This assurance comes after Benin’s narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda last Friday, coupled with Nigeria’s close 2-1 win against Lesotho, while South Africa was held to a 0-0 draw by Zimbabwe.

Rohr’s Perspective

In a recent interview, Rohr, who managed Nigeria’s national team for five years, conveyed his confidence in the capabilities of his current squad.

“Our challenge in Uyo is significant,” Rohr told reporter Osasu Obayiuwana. “We will be without two crucial players due to suspensions from accumulated yellow cards, yet the qualification battle remains wide open among South Africa, Benin, and Nigeria.”

“Having the opportunity to determine our own fate on home soil might offer a slight edge, but the final result is far from guaranteed,” Rohr added.

For Nigeria to secure their World Cup berth, they must not only triumph but do so with a minimum two-goal difference, while also hoping for favorable outcomes in other matches.

The upcoming encounter in Uyo promises to be fiercely competitive, requiring Eric Chelle‘s squad to be thoroughly prepared for an intense and demanding contest on the field.
