Di Matteo Praises Hazard and Costa Following Their Emotional Return to Stamford Bridge
Roberto Di Matteo, the former Chelsea manager, warmly commended Eden Hazard and Diego Costa after their heartfelt comeback to West London during the legends match against Liverpool.
Chelsea legends Mikel Obi and Celestine Babayaro featured in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge during the charity legends game.
The charity match, held to support the Chelsea Foundation, brought together some of the club’s most celebrated players in SW6 for a day filled with nostalgia, fun, and a tribute to Chelsea’s illustrious past, despite the Blues narrowly losing 1-0.
Di Matteo Reflects on the Match
After the final whistle, Di Matteo, who famously guided Chelsea to their 2012 Champions League triumph, emphasized that the event’s significance extended beyond the scoreboard.
“When players step onto the pitch, their competitive spirit shines through, and it was fantastic to witness that intensity. The match even got a bit heated because everyone wanted to come out on top,” he remarked.
He added, “Although conceding a late goal was disappointing, the primary goal was to see all these players back on the field. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who traveled to participate in this charity event.”
“The funds raised will positively impact many lives, which is the true victory. Congratulations to Liverpool as well-they brought a strong squad and made it a memorable occasion. Thanks also to the fans for creating such an electric atmosphere.”
Costa’s Passion Remains Unmatched
Diego Costa was among the most spirited players on the day, quickly reigniting his on-pitch rivalry with Martin Škrtel and earning an early yellow card, showcasing his trademark fiery style.
Di Matteo expressed his admiration for Costa’s intensity, saying, “I absolutely love him. He’s a remarkable character. Teams need passionate players like Diego. Back in my playing days at Chelsea, we had Dennis Wise, who would unsettle opponents, so I understand why managers valued having Diego on their side.”
Di Matteo on Hazard: ‘A Player Everyone Adored’
The event also marked Eden Hazard’s first time back at Stamford Bridge since hanging up his boots, where he was met with a roaring ovation from the Chelsea faithful, a testament to his enduring legacy.
“From the moment he donned the Chelsea jersey, he captured everyone’s hearts,” Di Matteo reflected.
Hazard and Costa, pivotal members of Chelsea’s Premier League-winning squads, once again combined to thrill supporters, evoking fond memories of the club’s golden era under managers like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
