Sam Elijah, a former Nigerian international, has come to the defense of Stanley Nwabali following his recent error in the match against Lesotho.
Stanley Nwabali, who secured his position as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, found himself under intense scrutiny after a less-than-stellar display against Lesotho.
His blunder nearly jeopardized the Super Eagles‘ vital 2-1 triumph at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
In light of this, Elijah has urged fans and critics alike to remain composed, encouraging head coach Eric Chelle to maintain confidence in Nwabali despite the recent lapse.
Elijah Appeals for Support of Nwabali
Elijah emphasizes that Nwabali’s previous reliable performances should not be overshadowed by one unfortunate mistake, highlighting the goalkeeper’s role as a crucial asset in past fixtures.
“He should not be dropped. Nwabali has been the backbone of our defense in numerous games; it’s unfair to condemn him solely for the error against Lesotho,” Elijah remarked in a recent interview.
While recognizing the gravity of the mistake, Elijah remains optimistic about Nwabali’s capacity to grow from the experience.
“Though these errors were significant for a goalkeeper of Nwabali’s stature, his experience and skill set suggest he won’t repeat them,” Elijah added.
“I am confident that after what happened against Lesotho, he will approach future games with greater caution. In my view, he remains an excellent goalkeeper, and the team should continue to rely on him.”
