A prominent Turkish football commentator has recently drawn attention to a concerning issue emerging within the Galatasaray squad.
Fuat Akdağ, a respected figure in Turkish football analysis, has expressed his concerns about rising tensions within Galatasaray, particularly highlighting Mauro Icardi‘s visible dissatisfaction with being cast as the backup to Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen emerged as the leading scorer in the Super Lig last season, playing a pivotal role in securing the championship for Cim-Bom. Being the club’s most expensive signing by a significant margin, it is expected that he holds the primary striker role.
Before Osimhen’s arrival, Icardi was the main attacking threat for the team. During periods when Osimhen was sidelined due to injury this season, Icardi admirably took charge, delivering consistent performances.
Akdağ’s Perspective
Not only did Icardi effectively cover for Osimhen, but he also maintained his reputation as a reliable goal scorer, netting five league goals compared to Osimhen’s two. However, once Osimhen regained fitness, Icardi was demoted to a substitute role.
Rumors have circulated regarding Icardi’s displeasure with this diminished status, a sentiment Akdağ has publicly supported.
“Icardi will never be content with a role on the bench,” Akdağ stated, as reported by Habersarikirmizi and cited by the Daily Post.

“From the outset of Osimhen’s tenure at Galatasaray, I anticipated that Coach Okan would encounter significant challenges managing these two forwards. That forecast remains valid,” Akdağ added.
“The competition between Icardi and Osimhen is inevitable as long as both remain on the roster. How Coach Okan navigates this sensitive situation is yet to be seen, but the tension is expected to persist. Icardi is not the type to quietly accept a secondary role.”
Examining the Dynamics Between Osimhen and Icardi
Prior to Osimhen’s loan transfer last season, Icardi was the focal point of Galatasaray’s attack. The club initially planned to deploy both strikers in a dual-forward system under Okan Buruk‘s guidance.

The partnership showed early promise until Icardi suffered an ACL injury, which left Osimhen to spearhead the attack almost alone, ultimately leading Galatasaray to a league and cup double victory.
With the addition of new signings like Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane, the competition for attacking roles has intensified, complicating the possibility of both Osimhen and Icardi starting together regularly.
