Sun King, a globally acclaimed pioneer in off-grid solar technology, has entered into a formal strategic alliance with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership is designed to expand renewable energy access, strengthen local manufacturing sectors, and harness data-driven innovations, steering Nigeria toward a sustainable industrial and clean energy future.
Announced at the Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF) in Abuja, this collaboration marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest to build a self-sufficient clean energy economy. It is expected to cut the country’s import dependency by as much as $150 million over the next five years.
The MoU signing was attended by Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima alongside Sun King’s co-founder and CEO, Patrick Walsh, underscoring strong government support for this public-private initiative aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s renewable energy transition.
Vice President Shettima highlighted the indispensable contribution of the private sector, stating, “Achieving Nigeria’s energy transformation requires decisive engagement from industrialists, innovators, and investors. We are dedicated to enhancing incentives for local manufacturing, streamlining regulatory frameworks, and fostering partnerships with state governments, investors, and development agencies to reduce risks and stimulate a vibrant renewable energy market.”
Sun King’s presence in Nigeria has grown exponentially, with monthly sales climbing from 3,000 units in 2020 to 75,000 units today, reflecting a rising demand for affordable, reliable energy solutions. The company projects this figure will triple in the near future as demand for clean energy intensifies.
Expanding beyond solar home systems, Sun King now offers a diversified portfolio including smartphones and energy-efficient appliances like refrigerators and televisions, all engineered to integrate seamlessly with their solar products. This product diversification supports Nigeria’s broader industrialization objectives by linking energy access with local economic development.
The MoU outlines three core areas of collaboration: promoting local manufacturing and value addition, enhancing data sharing and technical cooperation, and jointly advocating for off-grid solar as a fundamental component of Nigeria’s energy strategy.
The first pillar aligns with the Nigeria First policy, encouraging domestic assembly of select solar and energy-efficient products. By deepening local production and supply chain involvement, the partnership aims to create jobs and ensure Nigerians reap greater benefits from the expanding clean energy sector.
With supportive policies such as tax incentives, infrastructure upgrades, and regulatory simplification, Sun King anticipates that local manufacturing could substitute imports worth $150 million in solar and appliance components within five years.
Moreover, the collaboration will foster continuous engagement between government agencies and industry stakeholders to nurture a resilient local manufacturing ecosystem. Leveraging Sun King’s global manufacturing expertise, this partnership seeks to inform policy frameworks that will bolster Nigeria’s industrial base and enhance competitiveness in renewable energy and electronics manufacturing.
The second focus area involves data exchange and technical collaboration. REA and Sun King will work together to improve the collection and analysis of market trends, consumer behavior, and operational metrics to support initiatives such as the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) and the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) program.
This data-driven approach aims to identify skill gaps and infrastructure bottlenecks, optimize efficiency across the value chain, and refine Nigeria’s long-term renewable energy policies. This effort contributes to the broader Mission 300 initiative, which aspires to electrify 300 million Africans by 2030, with Nigeria playing a pivotal role.
The third area centers on joint advocacy to elevate the prominence of standalone solar solutions within Nigeria’s national energy framework. REA and Sun King will collaborate to showcase how off-grid solar power transforms communities by delivering electricity to households, schools, and small businesses in underserved areas.
By promoting enabling policies and innovative financing mechanisms, the partnership seeks to create an environment conducive to large-scale private investment, aligning public and private sector efforts around a shared vision for clean energy expansion.
Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director and CEO of REA, commented, “Sun King has been an essential partner in the Nigeria Electrification Programme. This new phase deepens our collaboration by integrating energy access, industrial growth, and supportive policies into a unified strategy for Nigeria’s clean energy future.”
Sun King’s rapid expansion has already generated over 12,000 jobs nationwide in areas such as sales, engineering, marketing, and data analytics. With the MoU in effect, the company expects to further increase employment through localized assembly, distribution, and after-sales services, creating thousands of new jobs in both rural and urban communities.
This partnership also aims to attract private sector investment into Nigeria’s renewable energy market by signaling policy stability and market potential. As Nigeria’s national grid faces growing pressure from rising demand and aging infrastructure, off-grid and hybrid solar systems are emerging as the fastest-growing segments within the power sector.
Industry analyses reveal that Nigeria’s off-grid market draws hundreds of millions of dollars annually from donors and private investors, yet domestic manufacturing remains underdeveloped. This collaboration intends to bridge that gap by aligning industrial policies with clean energy deployment strategies.
Patrick Walsh, Sun King’s CEO, summarized the vision: “This partnership unites two ambitious goals – Mission 300’s target to electrify 300 million Africans by 2030 and Nigeria’s industrialization agenda. Our mission is to make clean energy accessible, unlock manufacturing potential, and leverage shared data to build resilient renewable energy and electronics industries across Nigeria.”
Experts regard the REA-Sun King alliance as a groundbreaking example of sustainable industrial policy in Africa, demonstrating how governments and global energy companies can collaborate to foster inclusive economic growth. By integrating clean energy expansion with local manufacturing, the initiative aligns climate objectives with job creation and value retention, priorities vital to many African countries.
For Nigeria, where nearly 85 million people still lack electricity, this drive toward off-grid solar and domestic manufacturing could revolutionize the nation’s energy and economic landscape. The REA-Sun King partnership exemplifies how public-private cooperation can simultaneously promote import substitution and broaden energy access, advancing Nigeria toward a cleaner, more resilient industrial future.
