Nigeria’s Super Eagles find themselves third in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, accumulating 14 points-just one point shy of South Africa and trailing Benin Republic by three points.
Ex-Super Eagles defender Taye Taiwo has voiced his dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s lackluster display in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers, according to Soccernet.ng.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winners have managed three wins, five draws, and suffered a single defeat, placing them in a precarious position within their group.
Taye Taiwo, who represented Nigeria at the 2010 World Cup and formerly played for AC Milan, criticised the team’s sluggishness and insufficient preparation ahead of the qualifiers.

The former international insists that the Super Eagles possess the talent required to secure a spot at the World Cup without much difficulty.
“It’s disappointing. Considering the calibre of players we have competing at top clubs, it’s frustrating that we’re struggling to qualify for the World Cup,” Taiwo remarked. “Our squad is talented; we have the ability to make it. It’s often small issues that snowball into bigger problems for us.”

Taiwo highlighted the importance of early and thorough preparation, drawing parallels with the disciplined approaches of North African teams.
“Preparation must begin well in advance when aiming for the World Cup. There’s no room for delay,” he explained. “Look at Egypt and Tunisia-they started their campaigns early and won all their matches.”
“Those teams can now rotate their squads comfortably. Meanwhile, we’re forced to rely heavily on the same players because every point is crucial for us.”
