Gernot Rohr, the former head coach of Benin, has disclosed that he was the one who introduced Victor Osimhen to the Nigerian Super Eagles squad during his tenure.
On Tuesday, the Nigerian Super Eagles delivered a commanding 4-0 triumph over Benin Republic at the Uyo Township Stadium, solidifying their position in the FIFA World Cup playoffs.
Victor Osimhen was instrumental in this dominant victory, showcasing his exceptional form and propelling Nigeria closer to World Cup qualification.
The forward, currently starring for Galatasaray, netted a hat-trick against the Benin side, effectively ending their hopes of making their first-ever World Cup appearance.
Rohr Reflects Proudly on Osimhen’s Journey
Rohr took a moment to remind fans that he was the pioneer who called up the talented striker to the senior Nigerian team when Osimhen was just 17 years old.
The ex-coach fondly recounted the moment he handed the young forward his debut in the senior international arena.
Back in September 2016, just shy of his 18th birthday, Osimhen was selected for the 23-man roster for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania, following his Golden Boot triumph at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup.
During a post-match press briefing, as reported by Daily Sports and shared on X, Rohr shared his mixed emotions about Osimhen’s outstanding display against his former team.
“We gave it our all, but when you face a player of Osimhen’s caliber… I remember bringing him into the squad at 17, during our first match against Tanzania,” Rohr remarked. “It’s gratifying to witness his growth, though I’m not thrilled it happened against my side. Still, I hope he continues to shine in the playoffs for the nation I hold dear.”
The German tactician also expressed the heartbreak felt by Benin’s squad, whose historic World Cup dream was dashed by this defeat.
“It’s a huge disappointment because we aimed to make history by qualifying for the World Cup for the first time. We needed a win here, but overcoming Nigeria, especially when they’re fighting for playoff spots, is an immense challenge,” Rohr explained.
With his recent goals, Osimhen’s international record now boasts an impressive 29 goals in 44 matches for the Super Eagles.
