The influence of young individuals in determining the trajectory of any country is undeniably significant. In Nigeria, where the youth make up the largest segment of the population, their involvement in political processes, governance, and societal reforms is crucial. Their engagement in party politics and leadership roles is not merely beneficial but vital for the advancement and sustainability of democracy.
Engaging Youth in Political Parties
Political parties serve as the main avenue for ascending to leadership positions. Acknowledging the vital role of young people, many Nigerian parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), have established dedicated roles such as National Youth Leader, Zonal Youth Leader, State Youth Leader, Local Government Youth Leader, and Ward Youth Leader. These positions are designed to amplify the perspectives of young members throughout the party’s organizational framework.
Nonetheless, the mere existence of these roles is insufficient. Young people must actively embrace and fulfill these responsibilities with commitment, strategic preparation, and a clear vision. Political involvement should be viewed not just as a platform for personal gain but as a chance to contribute meaningfully to community development and national progress.
The Crucial Role of Education
Education forms the bedrock of effective political participation. Whether formal or informal, education equips young individuals with the skills necessary to seize opportunities within political parties and governance systems. An informed youth is better positioned to communicate ideas clearly, engage in constructive dialogue, and comprehend the intricacies of political administration. Education instills the confidence and capability required for responsible leadership.
Mentorship as a Pathway to Growth
Mentorship plays an indispensable role in nurturing young leaders in politics. Those who have thrived in political arenas often demonstrate humility, patience, and respect toward seasoned leaders. Rather than rushing into power, they take time to learn and accumulate experience. By observing and absorbing lessons from veteran politicians, they develop the insight needed to handle political complexities and the resilience to sustain their public service careers.
Qualities such as humility, reverence for elders, and eagerness to learn remain timeless principles for aspiring youth leaders. Personally, these values have been foundational throughout my involvement with the APC.
Youth Empowerment under the Tinubu Administration and APC
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s government has made commendable strides in empowering young Nigerians. Numerous youths have been appointed to influential government roles, entrusted with responsibilities that enable them to actively participate in national development. Likewise, the APC has consistently fostered youth inclusion across all tiers of its structure, from grassroots wards to the national executive.
This approach reflects a strong belief in the potential of young Nigerians and recognizes their indispensable contribution to realizing the party’s vision for a forward-looking Nigeria.
Final Thoughts
The message for Nigerian youth is unmistakable: political and governance opportunities abound. To capitalize on these openings, young people must prioritize education, seek mentorship, and embrace humility. Armed with these principles, they can not only engage effectively in party politics but also excel, playing a pivotal role in crafting a prosperous future for Nigeria.
