The ongoing playful rivalry between NBA sensation Anthony Edwards and Olympic sprinter Noah Lyles continues, sparked by Edwards awarding Lyles an unexpected title.

Anthony Edwards, the standout guard for the Minnesota Timberwolves, humorously dubbed Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles as the “Hater of the Year” during his debut “Believe That” awards ceremony held this past Wednesday.

Broadcast live on YouTube, the event highlighted Edwards’ vibrant personality as he handed out a variety of quirky accolades to notable figures from the worlds of sports and entertainment. The lighthearted tension between Edwards and Lyles traces back to remarks made by the sprinter last year. In a TIME magazine feature, Lyles voiced his displeasure over Adidas spotlighting Edwards with a signature sneaker, labeling him as a “player who hasn’t even reached the NBA Finals,” despite Lyles’ own longstanding partnership and achievements with the brand.

Edwards actively promoted his awards show on Instagram, urging fans: “Believe That Awards on YT at 4pm! Lock in! Tap In! Subscribe! Like! All da above!”

Among the other inventive categories were “White Boy of the Year,” “Woman of the Year,” and “Artist of the Year.” Demonstrating his trademark confidence, Edwards dominated the “Sneaker of the Year” segment by awarding all five top positions to his AE1 signature shoe collection. Actress Mara Wilson was honored with the “Legacy Award.”

Edwards impressed with averages of 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.

Reflecting on his offseason regimen, Edwards highlighted his dedication to refining the basics.

“I really focused on improving my fundamentals,” Edwards shared with the Associated Press. “There were many repetitive, tedious sessions in the gym, just perfecting one-dribble pull-ups. But I believe it’s going to pay off.”

The Minnesota Timberwolves are slated to kick off their 2024-25 season on October 22, facing off against the Portland Trail Blazers.
