Colin Udoh has revealed insights into a pivotal halftime speech delivered by NFF President Ibrahim Gusau during the clash with Benin Republic.
In a thrilling encounter in Uyo on Tuesday, the Super Eagles triumphed 4-0 over Benin, preserving their aspirations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.
Although Victor Osimhen‘s remarkable hat-trick was instrumental, Nigeria’s qualification prospects appeared precarious as the match progressed.
It was Frank Onyeka‘s stunning volley in the final moments that ultimately reignited the team’s hopes of advancing to the next stage.
Insights from the NFF President
According to insider accounts, there was uncertainty among the players about the exact criteria needed to secure qualification during the match.
Nonetheless, the timely guidance from the Nigeria Football Federation‘s top brass was instrumental in steering the Super Eagles toward a playoff berth.
Udoh disclosed that Ibrahim Gusau personally entered the team’s dressing room at halftime to ensure the players fully understood their target.
“After the match, I spoke with the NFF President, and he mentioned that during halftime, he addressed the team,” Udoh shared.
“He emphasized to Osimhen and the squad that they needed to net four goals to advance.”
Thanks to Gusau’s clear directives and Onyeka’s decisive goal in the dying moments, Nigeria’s quest for World Cup qualification remains alive.
The Super Eagles are now preparing to face Gabon in a playoff showdown scheduled for Morocco this November, contingent on the official FIFA rankings release on October 23.
