Victor Osimhen, the captain and forward for Galatasaray and leader of the Super Eagles, has lauded the outstanding leadership qualities of William Troost-Ekong, the defender currently playing for Al-Kholood. Osimhen emphasized Troost-Ekong’s crucial influence within the Nigerian national squad, as highlighted by Soccernet.ng.
Despite a reduction in his playing time under coach Eric Chelle, the experienced defender remains a fundamental pillar for the team’s cohesion and spirit.
In the September international fixtures, Troost-Ekong was left out of the starting lineup against Rwanda and only featured in the first half against South Africa at the Free State Toyota Stadium. He was substituted at halftime after an unfortunate own goal.
However, the 32-year-old returned to the starting eleven for the match against Lesotho in Polokwane, where he successfully converted a penalty, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s commanding victory, which was later sealed by Akor Adams.

Osimhen Applauds Troost-Ekong’s Leadership
Although Troost-Ekong did not take the field during Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 triumph over the Republic of Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, his leadership was palpably felt from the bench.
He played a vital role in motivating his teammates, urging them to maintain focus and intensity until the final whistle.
Meanwhile, Osimhen dazzled on the pitch, scoring a remarkable hat-trick against Gernot Rohr’s side, delivering one of the most memorable individual performances in recent Super Eagles history.

Following the match, the former Napoli star took to social media to express gratitude to his teammates for their collective effort, singling out Troost-Ekong for his unwavering support and leadership.
“A remarkable leader both on and off the field. Your constant encouragement to every teammate is truly inspiring. Thank you, captain,” Osimhen wrote about Troost-Ekong on his Instagram story.
South African Stars Praise Osimhen’s Masterclass
As the final phase of World Cup qualifiers unfolded, Benin Republic led the group after South Africa was docked three points by FIFA for fielding the suspended Teboho Mokoena in their fixture against Lesotho.
South Africa’s hopes for direct qualification hinged on Nigeria defeating Benin, while Nigeria needed Rwanda to topple South Africa. However, Rwanda’s convincing 3-0 victory over South Africa complicated the qualification scenario.

Following Benin’s heavy 4-0 defeat in Uyo, South Africa clinched their World Cup berth. Notably, Mokoena and another South African player took to Instagram to commend Osimhen’s outstanding performance, which was instrumental in their qualification.
Both Troost-Ekong and Osimhen have been instrumental leaders for Nigeria in recent times and are anticipated to continue their impressive form as the Super Eagles prepare to face Gabon in Morocco next month.
