Rooney Claps Back at Rashford: “Take Responsibility” After Star Points to Man United’s ‘Inconsistent’ Atmosphere for Career Woes

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged Marcus Rashford to take a moment for introspection after the forward cited the turbulent atmosphere at Old Trafford as a factor in his recent dip in form.

Following Rashford’s comments linking his performance challenges to the unstable environment at Manchester United, Rooney highlighted the significance of individual responsibility in overcoming such obstacles for the England international.

At 27, Rashford experienced a period on the sidelines at Manchester United amid inconsistent performances and friction with then-coach Ruben Amorim. He has since made a move to Barcelona, where he is steadily rebuilding his confidence and form.

Rashford’s Viewpoint

In a recent interview, Rashford conveyed hopefulness about returning to his best level, attributing his earlier struggles largely to the unpredictable conditions he faced at Manchester United.

“Maintaining consistency is vital,” Rashford stated. “I was operating in a very unsettled environment for a long stretch, which made it difficult to deliver steady performances.”

“Whether in sports or any profession, achieving regularity requires a stable routine and consistent training practices.”

“Throughout my journey, there have been many shifts, but my focus remains on progressing. Enhancing consistency is essential if I want to perform at my highest level regularly.”

Rooney’s Perspective

Wayne Rooney, who enjoyed a storied tenure at Manchester United from 2004 to 2017, scoring 253 goals in 259 appearances, countered Rashford’s stance by stressing that the onus is on the player.

“Although the surroundings might not have been perfect, the ultimate responsibility lies with the individual,” Rooney commented, as covered by the BBC.

“When a player’s form dips or they are left out of the lineup, it’s tempting to point fingers at external circumstances, but the true measure is how the player responds.”

“There have been games where Rashford could have shown more determination and energy, and that’s something no environment can dictate.”

“I hold Marcus in high regard both as a footballer and as a person, but attributing his struggles solely to the setting seems like an oversimplified explanation.”
