Following a narrow 2-1 victory over Lesotho and an emphatic 4-0 win against the Republic of Benin, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have successfully secured their place in the 2026 World Cup play-off round.
Ex-Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has expressed strong confidence in Nigeria’s prospects as they prepare to face Gabon in the forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup play-offs, according to Soccernet.ng.
After a commanding 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo, which followed a closely contested 2-1 win against Lesotho earlier in October, the Super Eagles have earned their spot among the top four second-placed teams in the CAF qualifiers. This achievement sets up a crucial play-off showdown with Gabon.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Onazi emphasized the team’s revitalized determination and focus following a challenging start to their qualification journey.
“Based on how the team has performed recently, I am optimistic about our chances. Initially, many fans were uncertain, but the current phase has rekindled our belief,” Onazi stated.
“The early stages of the qualifiers were tough, yet the commitment and intensity the players are showing now demonstrate their understanding of the World Cup’s importance. Their dedication is clear, and I believe this energy will propel us forward.”

Under the leadership of coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria has experienced a resurgence, highlighted by Victor Osimhen‘s hat-trick and Frank Onyeka‘s crucial goal that helped seal their play-off qualification.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has reaffirmed its full backing of Chelle as the team prepares for the decisive two-legged tie.

Onazi Warns of Gabon’s Challenge Ahead
While confident, the 2013 AFCON champion cautioned that Gabon will be a stern opponent, noting their tactical discipline and consistent performances throughout the qualifiers.
“This encounter won’t be easy as Gabon had an almost flawless qualifying campaign and amassed significant points,” Onazi remarked.
“We must approach this tie with vigilance. The game has changed, and Gabon will test us thoroughly. I remain hopeful, but the players need to treat this as if it were a World Cup or AFCON final.”

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Gabon in the play-off semi-final this November, with the winner advancing to challenge either Cameroon or DR Congo for a spot in the inter-confederation play-offs.
