Abdoulaye Ouzerou, the head coach of the Benin Republic women’s national football team, is undeterred by the challenge of facing Nigeria’s powerful Super Falcons as both sides prepare for the crucial qualifiers of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), according to Soccernet.ng.
In this decisive qualifying round, Benin is set to confront the continent’s ten-time champions, Nigeria. The first leg will be hosted this week at Stade Kégué in Lomé, Togo, as Benin currently does not have a CAF-approved stadium for home fixtures.
Although Ouzerou openly concedes Nigeria’s technical superiority, he places immense trust in his team’s mental fortitude to narrow the gap against their illustrious adversaries.

“Our greatest asset is our resolve and spirit. When physical and technical skills are lacking, mental strength becomes the key,” Ouzerou confidently told Daily Post.
“I firmly believe our players are mentally ready. We will rely heavily on that mindset.”
Nigeria, the most decorated team in WAFCON history, has consistently qualified for every edition of the tournament, highlighting their dominance across Africa.

Despite the formidable challenge, Ouzerou remains hopeful, stressing that football is unpredictable and no result is guaranteed.
“In terms of physicality and technique, Nigeria is clearly superior-we acknowledge that fully,” he admitted. “However, mentally, I believe we can make up for those differences.”
The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Nigeria’s MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.
