Southampton manager Will Still has clarified the reasons behind the absence of Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo from Southampton’s matchday squads this season.
Following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League last campaign, speculation mounted regarding Aribo’s future at St Mary’s Stadium.
Throughout the summer transfer window, rumors linked Aribo with potential moves to clubs like Rangers and Besiktas, but no transfer materialized, leaving him at the Championship club.
This situation also led to Aribo missing out on the club’s pre-season preparations, which has influenced his current standing within the squad.
Will Still Explains Aribo’s Exclusion
Supporters have voiced their concerns over Aribo’s scarce playing time, leading Still to provide insight into the complexities of team selection.
“Joe Aribo and Samuel Edozie are still integral members of our squad, but both missed a large chunk of pre-season. We have to be honest and equitable with all players,” Still told the Daily Echo.
He continued, “Who do you leave out? Should we drop Leo Scienza, Tom Fellows, Finn Azaz, or Jay Robinson just because Sam Edozie has returned?”
“These decisions are difficult. I aim to be as clear and impartial as possible with everyone. Although challenging, these choices are necessary, and that’s the path we’re following at the moment,” the Belgian coach added.
The new head coach, who recently assumed control of the team, attributed Aribo’s exclusion to the intense competition for starting roles.
Southampton, currently grappling with inconsistency-having secured just one victory in their last five matches and sitting 16th in the Championship-has seen Still face criticism for sidelining experienced players.
After ten fixtures in England’s second tier, Southampton have gathered 12 points, trailing league leaders Coventry City by a margin of ten points.
