Super Eagles‘ Defensive Challenges Persist as Another Full-Back Battles Fitness Issues
Nigeria’s national squad may encounter further defensive difficulties ahead of their pivotal World Cup qualifying playoff, as left-back Zaidu Sanusi struggles to return to full health.
Porto‘s defender is currently doubtful for his club’s upcoming Europa League fixture against Nottingham Forest due to a calf injury, casting uncertainty over his participation in Nigeria’s matches next month.
Porto Confirms Sanusi’s Calf Injury
Sanusi was absent from Porto’s recovery session on Sunday morning at the CTFD Jorge Costa training facility following their commanding 4-0 win over CD Celoricense in the Portuguese Cup.
The club has since confirmed that the Nigerian international is undergoing treatment for a right calf injury sustained prior to his return from international duty.
The 28-year-old’s omission from Porto’s lineup for the Cup tie highlights the club’s cautious stance on his rehabilitation.
Sanusi has been integral to Porto’s campaign this season, featuring in nine matches across all competitions, netting one goal and providing an assist. He also started in both of Porto’s initial Europa League group stage games against Salzburg and Red Star Belgrade, emphasizing his value to the team.
Mounting Defensive Issues for the Super Eagles
For the Super Eagles, Sanusi’s injury comes at a particularly challenging moment. The team is already grappling with defensive setbacks, as Ola Aina and Felix Agu remain sidelined with long-term injuries.
Sanusi’s recent return to the national squad, after nearly twenty months away, was prompted by the withdrawal of Bright Osayi-Samuel from the roster.
With a decisive 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon scheduled for November 2025, head coach Eric Chelle will be eager for the left-back to regain fitness promptly.
