Lionel Messi: 8-time Ballon d’Or winner close to contract extension with Inter Miami

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is reportedly close to signing a new deal with MLS side Inter Miami.

Lionel Messi is reportedly going over the “final details” of a much-anticipated Inter Miami contract extension, according to reports.

Under the current terms, which Messi penned back in the summer of 2023, the Argentine icon is set to become a free agent at the end of 2025.

As the MLS comes to a close, Lionel Messi scored 2 goals and assisted 1 as Inter Miami defeated Atlanta United 4-0 at home.

This comes as teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets have already announced their impending retirements, leaving questions about the 38-year-old’s future.

However, any doubts over Messi’s commitment or battle with Father Time have proven unfounded on the pitch. He concluded a record-breaking individual MLS regular season campaign with a hat-trick against Nashville SC, boosting his league tally to 29 goals and 19 assists.

Lionel Messi set for new Inter Miami contract

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the mutual desire to continue the project.

“Messi, expected to stay and sign new deal at the club with final details being sorted…as he’s fully focused on Inter Miami project.”

The duration of the new deal remains to be seen, but securing Messi for even one more year would be a huge victory, especially as 2026 will see the World Cup co-hosted by the United States and the opening of Miami’s new Miami Freedom Park stadium.

Messi’s participation in next year’s World Cup for Argentina is yet to be confirmed, but this contract extension could mean the ex-Barcelona man intends to remain active beyond 2026.
