In a significant development ahead of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Play-Off, Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made a notable comeback in Serie A, helping Udinese secure a 1-1 draw against Cremonese at the Stadio Giovanni Zini.
After serving a two-month ban due to violations of betting rules, the former Watford goalkeeper was reinstated into Udinese’s starting eleven, marking his first appearance this season.

Okoye’s performance was marked by composure and assurance, showcasing the skills that have made him a key figure for the Super Eagles. One of the match’s defining moments was his impressive save against a one-on-one attempt by Jamie Vardy, which earned enthusiastic applause from the home crowd. His quick reactions and steady control were pivotal in a tightly contested match that ended in a draw.
This return is particularly timely for Nigeria, as the team’s primary goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, has recently come under criticism for his performances and attitude on the pitch.
At 26 years old, Okoye’s resurgence could spark renewed competition for the starting goalkeeper position as Nigeria gears up for the crucial World Cup play-off matches.
Following the game, Udinese’s sporting director Gianluca Nani expressed his satisfaction with Okoye’s form, stating, “Okoye has been exceptional in training lately; it’s been nearly impossible to score against him during sessions. We’re thrilled to have him back as our first-choice keeper, and there was never any doubt about his role. I also want to commend the player who stepped in during his absence for doing a commendable job.”
Okoye’s return not only boosts Udinese but also provides Nigeria with vital confidence as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With Nwabali’s recent struggles, having Okoye back in form offers the Super Eagles a stronger and more reliable option between the posts.
Looking ahead, Okoye aims to reclaim his position as Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper as the team focuses on their November play-off campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
