Nigerian talents Victor Olatunji and Osaze Urhoghide have earned spots in Major League Soccer’s Team of the Matchday, joining the legendary Lionel Messi, according to Soccernet.ng.
The recognition of Olatunji and Urhoghide among the league’s top eleven highlights a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 MLS regular season.
Both players delivered crucial performances that propelled their teams, Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas respectively, into the playoffs.

Olatunji’s rising star in North American soccer was cemented on a pivotal night where he netted a brace in Real Salt Lake’s 2-2 draw against St. Louis CITY SC. This result ensured RSL’s fifth straight playoff qualification.
The 25-year-old striker’s first two MLS goals came rapidly within the first 30 minutes, showcasing his speed, sharp decision-making, and intelligent positioning.

Since joining Real Salt Lake earlier this year, Olatunji has impressed fans by scoring four goals in just eight matches.
His opening goal was a result of a perfectly timed run to connect with Zavier Gozo’s assist, while his second was a composed finish after a rapid 60-yard dash onto a through ball from Diogo Gonçalves. This performance signals a player ready to shine as RSL prepares to face the Portland Timbers in the postseason.

Urhoghide’s Defensive Mastery Secures Nigerian Representation
Defensively, Osaze Urhoghide made a significant impact by scoring the decisive goal in FC Dallas’ 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on the road.

His powerful header not only ended Vancouver’s six-game unbeaten streak at home but also clinched a playoff spot for Dallas during Eric Quill’s inaugural season as head coach.
This marked Urhoghide’s debut appearance in the Team of the Matchday, a testament to his steady performances and increasing leadership since transferring from Sheffield Wednesday in 2024.

Urhoghide’s commanding defensive presence has been crucial for FC Dallas this season. He excels in aerial duels, maintains composure under pressure, and confidently ventures forward when opportunities arise. His goal against Vancouver epitomized his assuredness and capped off an impressive season for the 25-year-old, who has publicly committed to representing the Super Eagles.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi secured his inaugural MLS Golden Boot by netting a hat trick and providing an assist in Inter Miami‘s 5-2 triumph over Nashville.
The former Barcelona superstar concluded the season with 48 goal involvements, just one shy of the all-time record set by ex-Arsenal forward Carlos Vela.
