EU Unites in Strong Support for Ukraine, Imposes Tough New Sanctions on Russia at Summit

The Russian Foreign Ministry has criticized the European Union’s sanctions on Moscow, arguing that these restrictions primarily inflict damage on the EU itself. Spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused EU officials of denying the ineffectiveness of their punitive actions. She also condemned the recent U.S. energy sanctions as detrimental to efforts aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine, emphasizing that Russia’s objectives in the ongoing conflict remain steadfast. On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the new sanctions imposed by the U.S. and EU, describing them as “crucial.” He stressed that a ceasefire could only be realized through heightened pressure on Russia and firmly dismissed any notion of territorial compromise. Correspondent Dave Keating reports from the European Parliament in Brussels on these developments.
