Kogi Electoral Commission Sets the Stage for 2026 Local Government Elections!

Kogi Electoral Commission announces 2026 LG polls

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) has formally declared its intention to hold the 2026 Local Government Council Elections throughout the state.

During a press conference in Lokoja on Wednesday, KOSIEC Chairman Mamman Nda Eri announced this development, citing compliance with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, alongside the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2025. These laws require the Commission to issue an election notice at least 360 days prior to the election date.

“In line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, the Commission is mandated to publish a notice of election no later than 360 days before the scheduled polling day,” Eri explained.

He further clarified that both the Electoral Act and the state’s electoral law authorize KOSIEC to oversee elections for Chairmen of the 21 Local Government Areas and Councillors representing the 239 Electoral Wards across Kogi State. A comprehensive timetable and detailed schedule of election-related activities will be unveiled in due course.

Eri highlighted that only political parties officially registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be permitted to field candidates in these elections.

He urged all political parties, aspirants, and relevant stakeholders to strictly follow the election timetable, the provisions of the Electoral Act, and KOSIEC’s guidelines to guarantee elections that are free, fair, credible, and peaceful within the state.

Reaffirming the Commission’s dedication to transparency and inclusiveness, the Chairman noted that the early announcement of the election notice aims to boost preparedness and build confidence among all stakeholders.

The press briefing was attended by representatives from political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies, including the Nigerian Army and Police, all of whom pledged their support for a peaceful and credible electoral process.

Additionally, Eri called on media outlets and non-governmental organizations to actively participate in voter education campaigns ahead of the elections, emphasizing that robust citizen engagement is crucial for strengthening grassroots democracy in Kogi State.
