British-Nigerian artist Dave has unveiled his third studio project, The Boy Who Played the Harp, released under Neighbourhood Recordings. This album follows his acclaimed 2021 record, We’re All Alone in This Together, and includes collaborations with James Blake, Jim Legxacy, Kano, and Tems.
The album’s name draws inspiration from a passage in the Bible’s Book of Samuel (1 Samuel 16:14-23), where King Saul calls upon a young shepherd named David to play the harp, easing his torment from malevolent spirits.
The Boy Who Played the Harp presents a more introspective and subdued sound compared to Dave’s previous work. James Blake’s production highlights spaciousness and minimalism, while Tems adds a comforting warmth. Kano contributes a seasoned, guiding presence, and Jim Legxacy’s melodic sensibilities subtly enrich the album’s texture. Tracks like “175 Months” transform a heartfelt prayer into a compelling rap narrative; “Fairchild” boldly addresses the harsh realities of gender-based violence; and “Chapter 16” offers a poignant conversation bridging generations.
Comprising ten tracks, the album delves into themes such as spirituality, self-discovery, and creative expression, skillfully blending emotional openness with artistic precision. To mark the album’s launch, Dave has announced a 14-date arena tour across the UK and Europe scheduled for next spring.
