Argentina goes to polls amid economic crisis and Trump ‘interference’

Sunday’s election poses a critical test for Argentina’s controversial libertarian president, Javier Milei, whose leadership has been marked by bold promises and mounting challenges.

Since assuming office in December 2023, Milei has vowed to usher in “a new era of peace and prosperity” by aggressively cutting government expenditure and taming inflation. However, his administration now confronts a turbulent political and economic landscape, compounded by allegations that his close associate, former U.S. President Donald Trump, is interfering in Argentina’s internal matters.
