Uyo Metropolis Road Rehabilitation Finally Set to Begin After Widespread Public Outcry

After much public outcry, road rehabilitation within Uyo metropolis set to begin

Following widespread public dissatisfaction over the resurgence of potholes on the roads in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, both residents and commuters have voiced significant concerns. In response, Aniekan Umanah, the Commissioner for Information, confirmed that repairs will soon be carried out on the damaged road sections.

Akwa Ibom is renowned for its extensive and well-maintained road network, with Uyo often recognized as one of Nigeria’s cleanest cities. However, the recent proliferation of potholes across the city center and surrounding areas has begun to erode this reputation.

A particularly problematic area is Atiku Abubakar Way, near the base of the flyover, where road conditions have worsened to the point that vehicles frequently become trapped. Other affected locations include several spots around Ibom Plaza, situated in the heart of the city.

Additionally, two significant potholes have developed near Itam Central Park, close to Itam Junction, severely disrupting smooth traffic flow and making travel difficult for motorists.

It was reported that the state government’s attention was drawn to the deteriorating road conditions following continuous media coverage and the circulation of images depicting the potholes on social media platforms.

In a statement issued by Commissioner Aniekan Umanah, the government acknowledged the issue and announced that the Ministry of Works would conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the affected roads within Uyo to facilitate prompt repairs.

“The State Government recognizes the emergence of potholes on several roads, primarily caused by the recent heavy and sustained rainfall,” the statement read.

“As the rainy season tapers off, the government pledges to commence thorough rehabilitation efforts aimed at ensuring the affected roadways are reconstructed to a high standard and durability,” it added.

The government also appealed to residents and drivers for patience and understanding while final preparations are made for the Ministry of Works to address the infrastructure challenges across the state efficiently and responsibly.
