Nigeria is swiftly emerging as a pivotal hub for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation across Africa, advancing beyond mere experimentation to deploy groundbreaking technologies that are revolutionizing business practices, governance frameworks, and societal interactions. This vibrant evolution is thoroughly explored in the Artificial Intelligence Landscape Report 2025, published by AI in Nigeria.
The report offers an in-depth evaluation of Nigeria’s AI ecosystem, assessing sectoral preparedness, emerging policy regulations, the surge of pioneering startups, and cross-industry collaborations spanning healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing, and financial services.
Kashifu Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), underscored AI’s transformative capacity, emphasizing its critical role in reshaping societal functions, accelerating economic growth, and improving public sector efficiency.
“Artificial intelligence presents Nigeria with a unique chance to overcome developmental hurdles and expedite advancements in vital sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, finance, and governance,” Abdullahi remarked.
He further noted, “Promoting AI innovation is essential not only for enhancing our global competitiveness but also for safeguarding our digital sovereignty and fostering inclusive economic progress.”
Wole Adeniyi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the AI in Nigeria Foundation, expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability not just to integrate AI technologies but to craft a narrative that reflects the nation’s distinct culture, values, and ambitions-one that resonates across Africa and on the global stage.
Co-founder of AI-in-Nigeria, Ehia Erhaboh, highlighted the impressive progress made within the AI sector over the past two years, fueling optimism about the country’s future prospects.
“There has been a notable increase in policy initiatives aimed at expanding the AI ecosystem, alongside growing interest and practical applications across diverse industries. This momentum is positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s AI revolution,” he observed.
Moving from vision to execution, Nigeria unveiled the draft Nigeria National AI Strategy (NAIS) in August 2024, outlining a detailed blueprint for nationwide AI development.
Further advancement came in February 2025 with the establishment of the Nigeria National AI Trust, responsible for overseeing NAIS implementation and channeling investments into strategic sectors. These steps signal a promising trajectory, contingent on consistent and effective follow-through.
Significantly, the Trust’s leadership includes private sector figures, and its initial funding from the Gates Foundation reflects early international endorsement of Nigeria’s AI ambitions.
The report forecasts that with successful scaling, Nigeria’s AI ecosystem could dramatically boost domestic productivity and service quality while generating AI-driven innovations with export potential throughout Africa and beyond.
“For entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers navigating the rapidly evolving AI landscape, this report serves as a vital resource to differentiate current realities from emerging opportunities,” it concludes.
Highlighting over 120 Nigerian startups harnessing AI to address both local and global challenges, the report emphasizes the strengthening synergy between government policies, industry collaborations, and regulatory frameworks that cultivate a supportive environment.
Sector-specific insights reveal that financial services, telecommunications, and education are leading AI adoption, while agriculture and manufacturing present significant potential for deeper AI integration and growth.
Importantly, Nigeria is not merely implementing off-the-shelf AI solutions but is actively developing technologies tailored to its unique socio-economic context. Nonetheless, the report warns that persistent infrastructural obstacles-such as unreliable electricity, limited internet access, and insufficient data infrastructure-must be resolved to fully realize AI’s transformative impact.
