The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced their takeover of the primary military base in Darfur’s El Fasher, a region plagued by severe famine and home to a large displaced population.
Concerns are mounting for the safety of hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped within El Fasher, as the paramilitary group claims to have captured the city after maintaining a siege for over a year amid Sudan’s ongoing civil conflict.
On Sunday, the RSF declared that they had gained control of the army’s key installation in Darfur’s capital, a location where famine conditions were officially recognized last year in a nearby displacement camp. Following this, the RSF issued a statement asserting that they had “expanded their hold over El Fasher, liberating it from the control of mercenaries and armed militias.”
