Singer Waje has opened up about her early pregnancy and the challenges she faced as a teenage mother.
Speaking on a podcast, Waje revealed she got pregnant at 16 and hid it from her mother for about five months. When her mom eventually found out, she went to meet the man’s family — but things didn’t go as expected.
According to her, the young man denied being responsible for the pregnancy, leaving her mother to take full responsibility for her and the baby.
“In Igbo land, when a child is born out of wedlock, the family automatically adopts the child,” she said. “So my mom just told him, ‘Okay, since it’s not you, the child is mine now.’”
Waje shared that years later, the man resurfaced, saying he wanted to reconnect with his daughter, who was now older. Though she initially resisted, she eventually agreed — but with conditions.
“I told him, you’re a citizen of Canada, fight for your child. I wanted her to get the best education possible,” she explained.
Waje revealed they discussed doing a DNA test, but he kept delaying it. “He agreed, and I waited and waited. Nine months passed, then years, and he still didn’t do it,” she said.
By the time her daughter turned 18, it was too late for him to file for her.
“I got pregnant when I was 16 years old and I didn’t tell my parents till the pregnancy got to 5 months. The owner of the pregnancy rejected me and the baby at the time but came back later when he was ok to claim the child and I kicked against it…….” – Waje pic.twitter.com/GzPuAmiD9p
