World Cup Playoff: Ekong assures Nigerians of victory against DR Congo

William Troost-Ekong has assured Nigerians that the Super Eagles are fully prepared to secure the crucial victory they need against DR Congo in Sunday’s final of the FIFA World Cup Africa Playoff at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay El Hassan. The decisive clash kicks off at 8pm Nigerian time.

Both nations, which share five Africa Cup of Nations titles between them, will battle for Africa’s single ticket to the Intercontinental Playoffs in March, where two more spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be decided.

Ekong acknowledged the strength of the Congolese side but insisted the Super Eagles’ determination and World Cup hunger will drive them to victory.

“There is no doubt that the Congolese will be a big challenge. They got here because they are tough and ambitious, and they also want to go to the World Cup,” he said.

“However, we have a large group of players here, 24 of them, and only about four of us have been to the World Cup. There is that adrenaline flowing; the desire to be on the world stage is a huge motivation for us to conquer on Sunday.”

Ekong, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Chidozie Awaziem are the only members of the squad with previous World Cup experience from Russia 2018.

Nigeria will face a DR Congo team packed with threats, including Spain-based Cédric Bakambu, France-based Nathaniel Mbuku, ex-Russia U21 star Theo Bongonda, and Pyramids FC striker Fiston Mayele.
