…education, health, infrastructure take biggest share
Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf has presented a ₦1.368 trillion proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year to the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative action, describing it as a strategic financial plan designed to complete his legacy projects.
The budget proposal, themed “Budget of Infrastructure, Inclusive Growth, and Sustainable Development”—the largest in the state’s history—allocates ₦934.64 billion for capital expenditure and ₦433.48 billion for recurrent costs, reflecting a 68% to 32% capital-to-recurrent ratio.
Delivering the budget draft to the State House of Assembly on Wednesday, the governor said the structure of the proposal underscores his administration’s commitment to growth-driven investments, adding that the draft strongly prioritises the economic and social sectors, with education, health, and infrastructure taking the largest shares.
The sectoral allocations of the budget indicates that Education received the biggest share of ₦405.35 billion, which represents about 30% of the budget, Infrastructure received ₦346.29 billion, amounting of 25%, while, Health was allocated ₦212.25 billion, which represents 16% of the total budget.
The governor said these allocations reflect his administration’s determination to build human capital, safeguard citizens’ well-being, and invest in long-term physical development, noting that agriculture, security, water, commerce, environment, transport, and support for women, youth, and persons with special needs, have also been given significant attention in the budget.
Governor Yusuf described the 2026 budget as more than a fiscal document but “a covenant and commitment to consolidate gains, complete key projects, and build lasting systems that serve generations to come.”
He reflected on the progress of his administration, noting that over 80% of the promises in his campaign blueprint had been achieved as the government enters the later stage of its four-year mandate.
The governor announced that the 2026 fiscal year will focus heavily on the Urban Renewal Project, which aims to modernise cities, improve mobility, and elevate the standard of living for Kano residents.
In addition, the government plans to launch mass housing schemes across the state and accelerate the development of SMEs within the Kano Economic City located around the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline corridor.
Governor Yusuf revisited the 2025 budget, which initially stood at ₦549.16 billion but was increased by the Assembly to ₦719.76 billion and later raised to ₦935.13 billion after a supplementary budget was approved.
The 2025 budget — tagged “The Budget of Hope and Human Capital Development” — allocated ₦313.27 billion for recurrent expenditure and ₦621.87 billion for capital projects,” he stated.
