The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of schools across four local government areas following fresh security threats affecting communities in the southern part of the state.
The directive, which affects schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun, and Ekiti LGAs, was communicated on Wednesday through a circular issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kwara State wing.
Yusuf Agboola, the state Chairman of the NUT, said the union acted on instructions from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development after the government raised concerns over escalating insecurity in Kwara South.
“Comrade chairmen, this is to inform you and, through you, all schools in the above local governments of the instruction to close down all schools with immediate effect until further notice,” the circular said.
“This decision was occasioned by the security challenges ravaging the area and the efforts of the government to control the situation.

“Treat this information as important and with the urgency it deserves, as it emanated from the ministry”, the circular said.
While the government has not yet disclosed specific details about the threats, Agboola assured school heads and teachers that additional directives would be issued as the security situation unfolds.
