The Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) has refuted circulating reports claiming that legendary Nollywood actor Chief Lere Paimo has passed away.
Earlier on Saturday, celebrity journalist and Chairman of the Best of Nollywood Awards, Seun Oleketuyi, had announced the supposed passing of the 86-year-old actor in an Instagram post. Oleketuyi described Paimo as a cultural icon who had survived stroke twice, expressing condolences in what he believed was a confirmed announcement.
However, the ANTP swiftly countered the report, assuring the public that the veteran actor, popularly known as Baba Eda Onile Ola, is very much alive.
In a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer, Prince Adejonwo Oluwafemi Femson, and released on Saturday, the association emphasized that the circulating posts—mainly on Facebook—were false and misleading.
“We would like to inform the public that reports circulating on Facebook about the passing of Chief Olalere OsunPaimo (MFR) are false,” the statement read.
“We have confirmed with Baba Eda Onile Ola’s wife that he is alive and in good health. Please disregard these false reports and be aware that they are being spread by unscrupulous individuals.”

The ANTP also used the opportunity to caution the public against the spread of unverified information, stressing the importance of fact-checking before sharing sensitive news—especially those concerning notable public figures.
“We urge everyone to verify information before sharing to avoid spreading misinformation,” the association added.
Chief Lere Paimo remains one of the most respected figures in the Yoruba film industry, and news of his alleged death had stirred confusion among fans before the ANTP’s official clarification.
