Solomon Enyindah, chief medical director, PH Psychiatric Hospital, gest lecturer at the Pamo University of medical sciences
The medical university in Port Harcourt set up by Peter Odili, former governor of Rivers State, has been challenged to lead in search for advanced remedies to local diseases in Nigeria.
The challenge was thrown by Solomon Enyindah, guest speaker at the 2025 convocation of the University on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
Enyindah, who is the chief medical director (CMD) of the Psychiatric Hospital in Port Harcourt, said such research works would foster collaboration on projects addressing local health issues like infectious diseases, with pharma and biotech companies, to serve local needs.

Most Nigerians have bemoaned lack of local initiative researches concerning fibroid, malaria, lassa fever, and rat-based fevers. Now, the chief psychiatrist said when fully stabilized, the Pamo University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) is expected to lead in researches incorporating labs for creating prosthetics, implants and tissue models, to invest in genomics, and bioinformatics labs for cutting-edge researches.

“Further challenges which involve policy makers, professionals and the entire system will be mitigating the integration of large language model in areas of; inaccurate information, fairness and bias, accountability, regulatory frameworks and trustworthiness.”
PUMS is holding its 5th convocation event starting Tuesday, December 16, 2025, dwelling on raising resilient leaders.
The guest lecturer said: “As leaders in your various units, departments, establishments and regions, you are encouraged to break through the resilience community with excellence. Over the years, people of your character have emerged as resilient leaders. They are people who have displayed strong characters of; adaptability, emotional intelligence, determination, courage and growth mindset.
He referred the large audience to recall the exploits of mentors such as Brent Gleeson (the award winning entrepreneur and best-selling author); Malala Yousafzai (a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who survived a Taliban attack); Nelson Mandela; Elon Musk, Larissa Murmann; and Mahatma Gandhi of India.
He told the crowd that they could be sitting beside one of such legends in the hall without knowing, and pleaded to be allowed to introduce the one. “Whoever you chose, let us remember that we have a mentor to thousands of young people, a leader who transmits positive energy to them, and has displayed the capacity to adapt to challenges and changes at different levels of his practice. He has maintained high quality care and mastered the ability to succeed in situations of chronic stress to establish PUMS. Please permit me to introduce to you the next Resilient Leader of our time.”
Pamo University which now has a teaching hospital which compliments the PAMO clinic in the town, has started producing what the owners call world class medical doctors and health sector scientists.
