Great News for FCT Residents: AMAC Abolishes Radio and TV Taxes on Homes!

AMAC Exempts Residential Buildings From Radio, TV Taxes In FCT

Honorable Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, the chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), has mandated an immediate suspension of the radio and television tax imposed on residential properties within the council’s boundaries.

This decision follows significant public discontent and strong opposition from residents concerning the recently introduced levy.

The announcement was conveyed through a press release by Kingsley Madaki, the senior special assistant on Media and Public Affairs to the AMAC chairman. The statement emphasized the chairman’s commitment to maintaining open dialogue with the community and ensuring that council initiatives reflect the needs and welfare of its citizens.

Chairman Maikalangu clarified that the radio-TV tax was originally established as a means to generate funds for critical development efforts, including infrastructure improvements, provision of essential services, and enhancement of public amenities.

However, he acknowledged that the implementation process lacked adequate engagement with stakeholders and sufficient public sensitization, which fueled the negative response.

“In light of the concerns expressed, the chairman has instructed the Revenue Department to immediately cease all collections of the radio-TV tax from residential households and to withdraw any outstanding payment demands previously issued,” the statement confirmed.

Furthermore, a thorough reassessment of the tax policy has been initiated to ensure fairness and transparency.

“Going forward, the AMAC administration will limit the radio and television tax exclusively to commercial establishments such as hotels, restaurants, business offices, and similar entities, where the charge can be reasonably justified as a contribution to the council’s service delivery without burdening private residences,” Maikalangu explained.

The chairman reiterated his dedication to fostering a supportive atmosphere for both residents and businesses, encouraging continuous cooperation between the public and the council to drive local development objectives.

He also called on citizens to remain actively involved and to express their views on policies that affect their daily lives.

“To promote clarity and openness, the council will disseminate detailed updates about the revised tax policy through official channels including the council’s website, social media platforms, and community town-hall meetings,” he added.

Maikalangu expressed appreciation for the community’s constructive input and reassured them of the council’s steadfast commitment to delivering quality services founded on principles of equity, accountability, and sustainable growth.
