Reps Set to Collaborate with Stakeholders on Dynamic 1999 Constitution Review

Reps to engage parties on 1999 constitution review

On Monday, the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review is set to convene with leaders from registered political parties as part of its continuous initiative to revise the 1999 Constitution.

Led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the committee has identified key focus areas for amendment, which include establishing state police forces, enhancing the devolution of powers, ensuring local government autonomy, and introducing designated seats for women in governance.

Recently, the committee wrapped up an extensive consultation tour covering all six geopolitical zones, engaging various stakeholders to gather valuable insights that will guide the constitutional review. The committee aims to present its comprehensive draft of proposed changes to the National Assembly by December 2025.

In a statement released on Sunday by House spokesperson Akin Rotimi, it was highlighted that the discussions will center on critical topics such as women’s special representation, reforms in the judiciary and electoral systems, the introduction of independent candidacy, local government restructuring, state policing, human rights, and justice.

The statement emphasized that this meeting offers political parties a valuable opportunity to submit proposals, exchange viewpoints, and actively participate in shaping the future of constitutional reforms.

Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized the importance of this engagement, describing it as a vital forum to leverage the expertise of political parties in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“Political parties serve as the backbone of our democracy. Their meaningful involvement is crucial to crafting constitutional amendments that are inclusive, credible, and truly representative of the Nigerian people’s collective will,” Kalu remarked.

Additionally, the committee has compiled a summary of all bills currently under review to support well-informed discussions during the meeting.
