Peter Obi Visits Lagos Trade Fair, Condemns Demolition Of Traders’ Buildings (Photos)

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday visited the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, where recent demolitions have left thousands of traders counting losses worth billions of naira.
Obi, accompanied by senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Victor Umeh, alongside other political leaders, was received by an emotional crowd of traders and youths at the site of the demolished ASPAMDA Market.

The visit comes a week after a controversial demolition exercise that saw at least 19 large buildings reduced to rubble, destroying shops, goods, and businesses. Affected traders have since staged protests, insisting that their structures had valid approvals from the Federal Government through the Trade Fair Management Board. Many accused the Lagos State government of discrimination and unjust treatment.

Speaking after the visit, Obi described the demolition as a test of justice, compassion, and governance in Nigeria. He commended the traders for their restraint despite their painful losses, and called on government at all levels to act with fairness.

“To destroy legitimate investments without due process is not only unjust but also economically destructive,” Obi wrote later on his X handle. He warned that such actions undermine productivity, discourage enterprise, and erode citizens’ trust in government.

He further revealed that lawmakers present during the visit have pledged to investigate the incident and ensure that such occurrences are prevented in the future.

“This nation must protect enterprise, defend the dignity of its citizens, and encourage productivity. A society that aspires to progress cannot afford acts that cripple the economy and livelihoods of its people,” Obi stated.

The visit has reignited debate around urban planning enforcement in Lagos, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and fair treatment for traders who claim they operated under government approvals.
